I was scrolling through my favorite design Instagram account, designmilk, when I saw this artwork by Kumi Yamashita. It caught my eye immediately, because upon first glance it’s easy to miss the shadows next to the squares, each in the shape of a different person’s side profile. Like the artworks that we analyzed in class, the audience is able to sense an additional dimension when looking at this artwork, whether that is the additional dimension of light coming in from the side (outside the frame), or the depth and texture of the edge of each square that casts the shadow. It’s amazing how it feels 2D and 3D (maybe even 4D) at the same time.
