Isaac Aden crafts masterful paintings made solely of gradients, with colors blending beautifully into each other. I think his words on the paintings are especially interesting – he says that abstract paintings are a form of representation, as they allude to (but do not depict) landscapes, cosmologies, patterns, and more. His work draws one’s eye in various directions depending on the gradient, challenging the viewer to decide if the painting is depicting a rise or fall, morning or night. As we increasingly work with gradients in Illustrator, Aden’s art makes me reconsider what abstract art can communicate to others.
