“All Good Design is Critical”

This quote from Chapter 3 of Speculative Everything really stuck with me from this week’s readings, especially in the nuances hidden in the word ‘criticism’. At first glance, criticism appears to only mean ‘negative’, when truly good critique offers an alternative, in a positive, almost idealistic way.

By extension, the authors noted that this concept can be seen through the form of protests as well. That reminded me of this article on “Typography and Modern Protest”

Combining elements from both of our readings, this article explores the narrative different designs/fonts share – the urgency and authenticity behind a hastily sharpee’d poster vs the consistency and branding behind yellow-lettered streets, for example.

Another great read is the Art of Protest, describing how this growth in ‘visual dissent’ will impact design across all mediums and channels.
