Cassandra Calin’s Cartoons

Cassandra Calin is one of my favorite cartoonists. I find her comics super relatable and they always give me a good laugh. I’ve been following her designs for around 4 years now. I chose to write about her work because I think that it is very similar to the speculative design manual we are working on this week.

She typically uses 4 boxes to create cartoons in black and white, depicting situations we’ve all experienced at some point in our lives. I feel that she intentionally maintains simplicity in her art and adds details to only those objects that are crucial to get her message across. In this way she carefully maneuvers the viewers’ eyes to the areas she wants us to focus on. This technique can be very effective and we can incorporate this idea to make our design manuals even more impactful.
