Rodley uses a deep learning algorithm to create a group of dinosaur images made from plants. In class, we learnt about the use of data to create artistic visualizations, and ultimately the marriage of big data and design. Since Rodley’s art uses neural networks and machine learning to apply images and patterns of plants to target dinosaur images, it can thus be characterized as an “artistic visualization” according to Wattenberg. Wattenberg argues that such visualizations must use data generated in real-life, which in this case are pictures of plants, to create art.
