Jeremy Mayer collects old and broken typewriters in the Bay Area, disassembles them, and uses their parts to create captivating new sculpture designs. Based on the repetitive, symmetrical nature of single-cell organisms, his designs are both mechanical & metallic, as well as organic. They typically radiate outwards – the article describes them as not unlike starfish, trilobites, and other creatures. As we work using code – a machine process – to create designs and patterns which mimic the real, organic world, Mayer’s designs remind us that the lines between the technological and biotic realms is often blurred.
