Metaphorical Illustrations Reflect on Contemporary Life

This article focuses on the creations of Belgian illustrator, Eleni Debo. Her illustrations highlight issues that the typical modern individual experiences in his/her everyday life. She focuses mainly on manipulating the background, especially by adding very subtle elements to it. This serves as the key way to drive her point across. For instance, she surrounds the girl who’s hard at work at her desk by a tornado containing all her stationary, thereby reflecting the chaos in her head. The dreary blue flash in the middle of the colorful garden which is a result of working on the laptop takes us back to the idea of ‘zoom fatigue’ which we all face nowadays. I felt that we could all learn from Debo’s ability to help us visualize and relate to various scenarios using abstract elements.
